Highways and Construction, a division of Transportation and Highways, deals with the maintenance of the borough's carriageways, footways and street furniture.

It is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of the public highway including the implementation of traffic safety schemes. We use high quality materials in all our work on footways, carriagways, street lighting, signs and benches.

Public lighting and signage

Installation and maintenance of all public lighting, illuminated bollards and signs including all lamps on Albert and Chelsea bridges.

Albert Bridge and Chelsea Bridge are regularly inspected with major refurbishment and relighting projects carried out approximately every eight years.

If you have any questions about public lighting, please contact Street Lighting.

Drainage

Installation and repair of highway gullies, and construction of new sewer connections.

If you have any questions about drainage, please contact Highways and Construction.

Construction of roads and bridges

  • Project management of bridge reconstruction and maintainance as well as major civil engineering schemes
  • Implementation of traffic management and highway improvement works
  • Structural advice on defective vaults and cellars

If you have any questions about construction, please contact Highways and Construction.

Streetworks

A small team liaises with utility companies to minimise inconvenience during major works by British Gas or BT for example. A proportion of utilities works are inspected and tested for compliance with safety and reinstatement specifications.
