Exhibition Road

Improved access

We are committed to ensuring that the Exhibition Road area is accessible and safe for all members of the community and we are working with an access consultant to achieve this.

People with limited mobility, including wheelchair users and those with push chairs, will find it much easier to move around the Exhibition Road area:

  • A single surface will pave the length of Exhibition Road
  • Kerbs and barriers will be removed
  • Wide, direct pedestrian crossings
  • Large pedestrian areas
  • London Underground will provide step-free access
    to South Kensington Station
  • Disabled parking allocation will be increased on Exhibition Road

We are working with Guide Dogs for the Blind and Transport for London
to develop features that will enable those who are blind or visually impaired to navigate the area. These include:

  • A tactile guidance with regular crossing points to guide those on both sides of Exhibition Road
  • Discreet steel blister paving at pedestrian crossings

The design of Exhibition Road aims to improve road safety by:

  • Slowing traffic to 20mph on Exhibition Road
  • Using natural barriers and removing traffic signals to encourage motorists to engage with pedestrians and concentrate on their surroundings
  • Preventing all turns between Exhibition Road and Cromwell Road (with
the exception a of left turn eastbound towards Knightsbridge)
  • Installing wide, direct pedestrian crossings at the junction between Exhibition Road and Cromwell Road
  • Restoring two-way traffic around South Kensington Station
