Road worksRoad works are an unpleasant by-product of city life. Generally priority is given to traffic flow and safety so road works may take place during the evenings and weekends when the roads are less busy. This of course increases their potential to cause disturbance. Details of road works can be obtained from the Highways Department. However, outside of normal working hours (when the works often take place) the Environmental Health Callout service can normally give information about the nature and extent of the work. Generally speaking, the works will be of an emergency nature (gas, water, electricity, drainage) or resurfacing of roads and pavements. If a contractor is found to be working outside of the terms of his contract then the Director of Highways will take the appropriate corrective actions.
