Which courses should I have completed before booking?


Introduction

Some of the examination bodies require candidates to have achieved a certain or specific level of knowledge before attending an accredited course between Levels 1 to 4. If you are in any doubt please call 020 7361 3002 for advice or visit the websites for the various examination bodies.

The courses listed below are for the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health’s qualifications. Their website address is www.cieh.org


Prerequisites for food safety courses

  • Level 1 Award in Food Safety – none (suitable for new employees where low risk and/or wrapped foods are used)
  • Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering – none (suitable for food handlers and managers where open and/or high risk foods are used)
  • Level 3 Award in Supervising  Food Safety in Catering – ideally Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering (suitable for supervisors and managers)
  • Level 3 Award in Implementing Food safety management procedures – as Level 3 above (suitable for supervisors and managers)
  • Level 4  Award in Managing  Food Safety in Catering – prior knowledge to the Level 3 (suitable for managers, supervisors and would-be food safety trainers

Prerequisites for health and safety courses

  • Level 1 Award in Health and Safety Awareness – none (suitable as an induction course)
  • Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace – none (suitable for all employees)
  • Principles and Practices of Manual Handling – none (suitable for staff involved with manual handling activities)
  • Level 2 Award Principles and Practices of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health - above Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace or equivalent knowledge (suitable for all employees)
  • Level 2 in Principles of Risk Assessment – above Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace recommended (suitable for employees and managers who need a basic understanding of risk assessment)
  • Level 3 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace – above Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace or equivalent knowledge (suitable for managers and supervisors)
  • Level 3 Award in Risk Assessment Principles and Practice – Level 2 in Principles of Risk Assessment  (suitable for supervisors)
  • Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace – Level 3 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (suitable for managers, supervisors and would be health and safety trainers)

Other courses

  • Professional Trainer Certificate – none (suitable for potential trainers)
  • Level 2 Award in Healthier Eating and Special Diets – none (suitable for health, social and education care staff and food handlers)
