Bonfires

Bonfires cause considerable air pollution by producing Carbon Dioxide (a gas that adds to the green house effect) Carbon Monoxide (a poisonous gas) and smoke (which can contain carcinogenic [cancer causing] particles).

Bonfire smoke can also be a ‘Statutory Nuisance’ to neighbours, which the Council can deal with under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 in much the same way as a noise nuisance. The Council can serve an abatement notice and the person may prosecuted if they do not comply with the notice.

If you have a problem caused by Bonfires contact the Noise and Nuisance Team.
