Under the Highways Act 1980 it is an offence to place table and chairs on the highway, for the purpose of providing refreshments, without consent.
The Council recognises the importance of ensuring that the licensing of tables and chairs is carefully controlled. It is particularly important because pedestrians can be put in danger and people with impaired vision, mobility difficulties or prams can be disadvantaged. In some instances residential amenity has been reduced.
Premises with a valid licence are required to display the licence in the window of their premises. Complaints about unlicensed premises should be made to the Highway Enforcement team or by emailing streetline@rbkc.gov.uk
